the Afghan Whigs Reunion

If you had a conversation with me about music in the 2000's, chances are solid that I drove the conversation into The Afghan Whigs at some point, either to your excitement or chagrin. For a young white man obsessed with old Soul music, the Whigs were a revelation, the sound I would've made if I was capable. Influenced but not derivative of the sounds of Motown and Stax that send me.

I came to the party a bit too late, since the band broke up in 1997 while I wasn't paying attention. I have been right on point for Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers, which is fantastic, but never saw the Whigs. This summer they're on a whirlwind tour, ending up in Asbury Park in New Jersey for a monstrous killer of a show, topping a bill that includes The Dirtbombs, Charles Bradley, The Roots, and Louis CK. I'll be there.
